Beirut, 9/5/2012
AFED participated in the 27th ministerial session of the UN Economic Commission for West Asia (ESCWA) which was held in Beirut between 7-10 May 2012. Secretary General Najib Saab participated in a ministerial panel held on 9 May on Arab regional preparations for Rio. The panel was chaired by the UAE Minister of Economy Mr. Sultan Al-Mansuori, and included Tunisian Minister of Environment Mrs. Memia Al-Banna and Palestinian Minister Yousef Abu Safiya. Saab discussed the green economy component of the Rio conference, and presented AFED recommendations for a unified Arab position. The panel provided an opportunity to consolidate member country positions prior the Rio Summit and pave the way for better engagement.
The focus was on how green economy can be responsive to challenges in the Arab region, especially for creating new jobs to address youth unemployment and inequitable growth. Saab proposed employing green finance and technology transfer to mobilize adequate financial resources for sustainable development.
